Archibald Everglade

Archibald Everglade — A Gentleman with a Stubborn Streak

Long before he carried the Everglade name, Archibald was simply known as Archi—a well-dressed man with a great mustache, a dry sense of humor, and very particular opinions about how things ought to be done.

Humble Beginnings

Archibald grew up in a modest household outside Blackwater, where money was counted carefully and nothing useful was thrown away. His father worked with his hands, repairing whatever neighbors brought to their door. His mother kept the household in order and made certain Archibald understood that being poor was no excuse for being rude.

From his father, he learned patience, practical skills, and the importance of finishing a job properly. From his mother, he learned manners—and that arguing with a determined woman often required more courage than sense.

As a boy, Archibald was curious and occasionally troublesome. He liked taking things apart to discover how they worked. Putting them back together was a skill he developed somewhat later, much to his father’s irritation.

Making His Own Way

When he was old enough, Archibald left home to earn his own living. He took work wherever he could find it, helping in workshops, handling deliveries, and keeping accounts for men who were better at spending money than counting it.

Over the years, his work carried him between Blackwater, Rhodes, and St. Denis. He learned to deal with all sorts: wealthy businessmen who quibbled over pennies, laborers who paid him fairly despite having little, and charming fellows whose promises were worth less than the paper they avoided putting them on.

He became careful about whom he trusted.

Archibald was generous, but he disliked being taken for a fool. A man who cheated him might receive one opportunity to make things right. A second opportunity was considerably less likely.

A Taste for the Finer Things

Though his upbringing was plain, Archibald developed a fondness for good clothes, good food, and a properly made drink.

He kept his boots polished, his spectacles clean, and his mustache groomed with a care some people considered excessive. Archibald considered those people poorly informed.

He particularly enjoyed experimenting with drinks. An evening spent adjusting a recipe suited him well, especially if there was someone nearby willing to offer an honest opinion. He kept notes on the successes and quietly disposed of the failures.

His humor was much the same as his appearance: deliberate, tidy, and occasionally sharper than expected.

The Years Alone

Archibald made friends easily enough, but he was slower to let people close.

He had seen marriages held together by money, appearances, or the simple fear of being alone. None of those arrangements appealed to him. He wanted someone whose company he enjoyed even when there was nothing special happening.

As the years passed, he settled into his own routines. Work occupied his days, and quiet evenings suited him. He had begun to think that companionship might simply be something life had passed over in his case.

Then he met Jeanette Everglade.

Meeting Jeanette

Jeanette was already running Everglade County alongside her brother, Jiuseppe, when Archibald came to know her. She had spent years raising Daniel, Liam, Millie and SusieMay, leaving little time for a life of her own. Now that the children were growing more independent, that had begun to change.

Their acquaintance grew through conversation and repeated visits. Archibald enjoyed her wit, even when it was directed at him. Jeanette found that he could hold a conversation without asking for money, influence, or some favor from the county.

He was kind, steady, and willing to speak his mind. She was clever, formidable, and quite capable of disrupting his carefully arranged routines.

Neither found the other boring.

Archibald began finding reasons to see her. Eventually, Jeanette stopped making him invent them.

An Everglade by Choice

They married in the spring.

Jeanette refused to surrender the Everglade name, and Archibald took it willingly. He understood what it meant to her and was proud to become Archibald Everglade.

Marriage brought him into a busy household, but he kept much of the man he had always been: particular about his clothes, dependable in his work, fond of a good drink, and unwilling to agree merely for the sake of peace.

He and Jeanette did not see eye to eye on everything. Archibald would have been suspicious if they had.

Archibald Today

These days, Archi is not seen around the county nearly as often as his wife. Ask Jeanette where he is, and she will usually tell you, “He’s home napping.” Sometimes she is right. Other times, he is somewhere in the county with his sleeves rolled up, working or fixing something he insists nobody else will do properly.

He still enjoys working with his hands, perfecting a drink, and offering an opinion that may or may not have been requested. Beneath the fine clothes and occasional fussing is a man who remembers the modest home where he began.

He values loyalty, keeps his word, and expects the same courtesy he gives.

And while marrying Jeanette changed his name and considerably complicated his schedule, Archibald has never regretted it.

He does, however, occasionally miss finishing a sentence without being interrupted.
